I have a peony with large buds that are not opening. What can I do to encourage the buds to bloom?

Failure of buds to open after they have reached the size of a small pea (bud blast) may be a physiological problem. Rutgers University found that bud blast may be associated with a lack of potassium in the plant, dry spells, and low temperatures during early spring.
