When my pumpkins are getting a nice size, I discover holes in them. Were they made by a bird or other animal? How can I prevent this?

Birds will peck at pumpkins, but their damage is slight, and the wound usually heals over. It usually doesn't prevent the pumpkin from ripening unless it is a deep wound from another source. If you want perfect pumpkins, you might use bird netting to cover the plants.
