Corn smut does not spread throughout a corn plant; it grows wherever a spore has landed. The best control is to watch for it and physically remove the galls as soon as you see them, especially before they rupture and release more spores. At the end of the season, remove and destroy all plant debris from the garden to prevent the disease from overwintering. Next year, select varieties that are resistant to corn smut.
