I want to get rid of decorative rock mulch around our foundation. Is there an easier way than with a shovel? What should I do with the ground underneath to prepare it for planting?

That is just the problem with decorative rock mulch; there is no easy way to remove it. You'll need to use the shovel-and-scoop method. Wear sturdy gloves because the rock is hard on nails and knuckles. Check around to make sure you don't leave any rocks in the lawn - hard on the lawn mower and dangerous to people when thrown. Once you've removed the rocks, you'll need to thoroughly turn or rototill the soil, which will be compacted and probably contains old construction debris. Have you ever done a soil test? This would be a good time to do so. Then you'll know how to amend your soil (add organic material and/or fertilizer, etc.) so what you plant next will perform optimally for you. Contact your local Cooperative Extension Service for information soil testing. One final note, be sure you don't unintentionally alter the drainage pattern and slope the soil towards your home.
