A bog is a natural, self-contained wetland. Bogs have distinct types of vegetation due to the high amounts of acidic soil and low amounts of nutrients. To start a new bog garden, the site needs to be either wet or able to hold water (many plans call for a plastic liner to hold in moisture). Additions of sphagnum and peat moss to the soil will lower the pH levels. This will also help to retain the water in the bog. The new site will need frequent watering to keep it moist.
