Thidiazuron is probably the most temperature-sensitive defoliant in cotton. Its is reduced with declining temperatures, but is severely reduced at temperatures less than 65 F and almost non-existent below 60 F. Available sunlight has some effect during the day, with sunny days extending the active temperature range slightly. However, a good rule of thumb is when nighttime temperatures are below 65 F only higher rates will work, and when nighttime temperatures are below 60 F, it should not be used. Other defoliation product options that perform under cooler night temperatures are available.
