DIP is the acronym that stands for degraded intake protein. In the 1996 NRC Nutrient Requirements for Beef Cattle, the crude protein fraction of a feed is divided into two components, and one of the components is DIP. The DIP is used by the microbes in the rumen to produce their protein called bacterial crude protein (BCP). The bacteria are eventually passed from the rumen to the small intestine. In the small intestine, the microbes are digested and amino acids absorbed across the intestinal wall into the blood stream.
