If you leave work, you may be able to continue your health insurance under COBRA for 18 months by paying the full premium plus a 2% administrative fee. Contact the human resources department where you work to see if you are eligible. This will give you time to investigate private policies if you are in good health or are being added to a spouse's policy. This time can also be used to cover preexisting conditions until they are covered by your new policy. Some states offer risk-pool insurance if you cannot qualify for a private policy. Contact the department of insurance in your state to see if your state offers this type of insurance. We would like your feedback on this Personal Finance Frequently Asked Question.
