One reason that new and/or higher fees have occurred is because credit card issuers’ profits from fees and certain billing practices that have been disallowed by government regulations have declined in recent years. Income from fees is being used to make up some of the difference so that card card companies continue to earn a healthy profit. Bottom line for consumers: try not to incur credit card fees, such as those for late payments or balances over your credit limit. Pay bills on time, and don't charge more than you are authorized to borrow.
