What is a rider to an insurance policy?

A rider is simply a separate document that has special provisions not included in the main policy that it is attached to. If you have special property, like a valuable jewelry collection, for example, that is not fully covered under your homeowner's policy, you can purchase a rider to the main policy to cover the special property.
