What is the best way to keep snow and ice from balling up under my barefoot horse's hooves?

Apply petroleum jelly or spray cooking oil on the sole of the hoof to prevent snow from packing. Keep in mind, however, that this practice alone is not adequate winter hoof care. It is still important to pick hooves regularly to remove dirt and debris.
