The type of horse you should choose depends on many factors--riding level, experience, type of riding, facilities, etc. You need to evaluate your riding skills first. With entry-level riding skills, you will want to look for a horse with a solid nature that will not be spooky or difficult to ride or handle. Your preferences also will help determine what you look for. Stock-type horses tend to be quiet, while other breeds may be more energetic. If you have any joint problems, a gaited horse might be more comfortable to ride. We suggest working through this learning lesson at Selecting the Right Horse.
