Cotton fibers are outgrowths from single epidermal cells of the cottonseed. They first appear at the time of flowering as slight swellings on the outer walls of some of the seedcoat cells. By the next day, these swellings have formed tubular outgrowths, which continues to elongate until the final length is obtained.
