How do I get my 14-year-old pony to lose weight? I ride him for about an hour each day. I only feed him about 1/2 pound of sweet feed each day and about 8 to 10 pounds of hay per day. He just won't lose the weight!

Most ponies do not need any grain at all, so removing the grain portion would help. You do not mention the pony's size or body condition, but if it is a small pony, you could reduce the hay amount but still feed at least twice a day. Typically, a pony of about 400 to 500 pounds could be fed 1% of its body weight in hay or 4 to 5 pounds of hay a day. Are you feeding any alfalfa hay? This is not necessary for easy keepers, so it might help to put the pony on a grass hay instead. Changing from one hay to another should be done slowly so as not to upset the horse's digestive tract. Making sure that the pony is worked on a regular basis will help with weight loss as well. If you still are unable to help the pony lose weight, consider talking to your veterinarian about having the thyroid checked or a complete exam. Ponies are notorious for being easy keepers, and it takes good management to maintain them at a proper weight. An overweight pony can lead to laminitis or other leg and hoof problems, so it is wise to address this issue.
