I don’t understand what sweetbreads have to do with gout. Does my husband have to give up all his favorites like doughnuts and cinnamon rolls?

No. The term "sweetbreads" does not refer to pastries and baked bread products. Instead, it refers to a dish made from the thymus or pancreas (organ meat) of a young animal. Organ meats are high in purines, and these should be avoided by people who are susceptible to gout. Gout is a form of arthritis that develops when excess uric acid in the blood builds up and forms crystals in one or more joints. This most often happens in the big toe.
