Is it normal for the two year olds in my child care to say "no" a lot?

Yes, it is normal for two year olds to say "no" a lot. Toddlers are learning to become independent and may use "no" to express control over their world. Be patient, and remember that they aren't saying "no" just to annoy or defy you. You can promote healthy social and emotional development by allowing the children in your program opportunities for independence, to make simple choices, and to practice problem solving.

Keep in mind that two year olds often mimic the language that they hear most consistently. If you say "no" to the children all the time, they may use the word to imitate you. Take a look at your own use of the word "no," and come up with alternative ways to redirect and/or correct the children. Try telling them what they should do rather than what they should not do.
