Adding liquid molasses improves palatability and reduces separation of micronutrients. A complete calf starter may contain about 5 to 8% molasses (5 to 8 lb per 100 lb of starter on an as-fed basis). However, Penn State researchers recommend 5 to 6% at the most. This was supported by an University of Minnesota study that found no advantage for 9% vs. 6% molasses. Both Universities observed that an inclusion rate of 12% molasses resulted in decreased calf performance vs 5-6%.
