Dairy Home

We operate a calf nursery currently from calf hutches. The farm we raise for had another grower that is no longer going to be providing this service. We have been asked to pick up the additional hutches. It has been alleged that at this person's site there has been a considerable amount of cattle that have died. I am afraid to bring the hutches here, even to disinfect, for fear of bringing something onto our farm. The hutches in question have been empty for about two months. What do you think?

We agree that you should NOT bring in the old hutches. You did not mention price, but the cost of one dead calf would nearly allow you to purchase a new hutch, especially if it is built from wood. Theoretically, two months of sunshine and disinfection should do the job, but we would NOT recommend this route. Mike Hutjens, Extension Dairy Specialist, University of Illinois - Illini DairyNet
