Both texturized and pelleted calf starters will be similar in intake and performance and superior to a ground or meal type calf starter. The key is to minimize fines and dust, increasing palatability. Use of liquid molasses improves acceptability. We recommend a tagged 18 percent crude protein calf starter with 8 to 10 percent crude fiber (complete starter with no additional forages fed until intake is over 3 to 4 pounds per calf per day). Barley and corn are fine grain energy sources, and soybean meal is an economical protein source (canola meal should work also if it is more economical). No urea until four months of age. Results with higher levels of undegraded protein are variable (roasted soybeans have worked well). Target the calf starter to contain 76-80 percent TDN (Total Digestible Nutrients).
