Is there any drawback to weaning calves at four weeks of age if their grain consumption in good (4 lb/day), and thus it can reasonably be assumed that their rumen development is fairly mature? Currently, calves are fed to appetite on grain, up to 6 lb, at which point they are allowed free-choice hay if they are still hungry.

Calves can be weaned when they are consuming 1 1/2 to 2 pounds of an 18% protein high quality calf starter. Introduce hay or forage after starter intake reaches 5 to 6 pounds. Thus, you can wean as early as three weeks if these guidelines are met. Mike Hutjens, Extension Dairy Specialist, University of Illinois - Illini DairyNET
