I understand that crossbred animals are now used in genetic evaluations in the United States if properly identified. What impact does this have on genetic evaluations for purebreds?

Crossbred records accounted for less than 2% of all records used for genetic evaluation in May 2007, so by numbers alone, impact on purebred genetic evaluations will not be large for an average animal. Crossbreds serve as contemporaries to purebreds, and as offspring of purebreds as well. Crossbreds will increase the reliability of genetic evaluations on purebred animals. Since crossbred offspring serve as another gene sample from a parent, they will have a direct impact on that parent's genetic evaluation, which may be either positive or negative, depending on genetic merit of the crossbred. Any advantage the crossbred has due to heterosis is removed from the system before the animal serves as offspring of or contemporary to other purebred animals.
