By two weeks of age, the eyes of my baby calves seem to show a fair amount of tearing. They are fed unpasteurized whole milk, kept in warm housing, and are quite healthy in all other respects. Could a lack of vitamin A be a problem?

We doubt if it is vitamin A unless you were not feeding colostrum (high in vitamins). Tearing might be caused by an irritant such as ammonia, dust, etc., so be sure the ventilation system is adequate and working properly. If you want to eliminate vitamin A as a possibility, inject at birth with an vitamin A-D-E shot (good idea anyway). Vitamin A deficiencies take time to develop.
