Using the 4-box Penn State particle size separator, total mixed rations (TMRs) should have 2 to 8% on the top box, 30 to 50% on the middle two boxes, and less than 20% in the bottom pan. The particle length of the hay will depend on the kind of mixer used and the moisture content of the TMR. The hay particle size in the final TMR should be close to 3/4 to 1 inch in length for dry TMRs and 1 to 1.5 inches in length for wetter TMRs to minimize sorting and maintain rumen function. Regular particle size separation of the TMR and refusals is recommended to check that cows are not sorting. Mike Hutjens, Extension Dairy Specialist, University of Illinois - Illini DairyNET
