We graze cows, calves, and heifers year round. We do not produce hay as farms are limited in area and rainfall is well distributed through out the year. When should calves be fed forage: prior to weaning (two months +) or during the in-milk period?

If the calf starter contains a fiber ingredient (such as barley, oats, soy hulls, etc.), no forage is needed until the calf is consuming 4 to 5 pounds of calf starter (after weaning). Forage should be fed after weaning. If forages are in short supply, weaned calves and heifers up to calving can receive high concentrate diets, but they must be limit fed.
