What is the difference between an alkalizing agent, such as magnesium oxide, and a buffering agent, such as sodium bicarbonate, in terms of mode and site of action?

An alkalizing agent (like sodium sesquicarbonate or magnesium oxide) raises the rumen pH (ammonia would also do this). A buffering agent (like sodium bicarbonate) attempts to maintain the rumen pH at its pKa which is 6.25 (when it dissociates).
