Calcium propionate can be fed to close-up and fresh cows at the rate of 100 to 250 grams a day as a source of glucose (reduce ketosis risk) and readily available calcium (avoid low blood calcium or hypocalcemia). The product is unpalatable and must be blended in a total mixed ration (TMR). It is a preservative and may reduce heating of the TMR in the feed bunk.
