In the United States, pelleted grains are finely ground (1,100 microns) and perform similar to finely ground corn. With grain fed through a parlor, cows can consume more grain per unit of time when provided as a pellet versus ground or crushed grain mix. Pelleted grains usually result in less dust.
Cracking or coarse grinding results in 3 to 5 pounds less milk (less starch available in the rumen) compared to fine grinding or pelleting. These recommendations are for corn grain-based diets.
