When major forage or grain changes are made in dairy cattle rations, how long does it take for the cow's rumen to adjust to the changes?

It is recommended that major feed/forage changes be done gradually over seven to 10 days. If possible, make one-third to one-half of the total feed change over four- to six-day periods (two or three steps). Changes of less than 10% of the total ration dry matter can be made in one step.
