When using a tub grinder to process dry forages to add to a total mixed ration, what is the recommended length of chop to make sure enough effective fiber is included in the diet?

With a tub grinder, we recommend processing the hay/straw/corn stalks/grass down to a particle length of 3/4 inch to 2 inches. Less than 3/4 inch in length results in no mat formation and less cud chewing. Over 2 inches can lead to sorting. If the product is dry straw or corn stalks, adding water (7 to 10 pounds) can improve palatability. Fuzzy cottonseed is another source of effective fiber IF you have greater than 5 pounds of dry matter over 3/4 inch in length or longer.
