When and how much can I use urea for milking cows? Is there anything to be cautious of when I feed urea?

Urea should be fed when the soluble protein is below 30 percent of the total crude protein in the ration. Normally, 0.1 to 0.3 pound is added (limit the amount to a maximum of 0.4 pound). Be sure it is mixed uniformly to avoid reduction of palatability and intake. Urea toxicity could occur if a cow consumed 1 to 2 pounds in one meal due to poor mixing. Adjust and increase the urea gradually in the ration. Mike Hutjens, Extension Dairy Specialist, University of Illinois - Illini DairyNEt
