Several universities have data supporting higher energy needs for calves in hutches or exposed to cold temperatures. Minnesota workers suggest that for every degree below 32°F, maintenance increases 1 percent. Calves housed at 0°F would have a 30 percent higher maintenance requirement. Adding fat, more liquid intake, more calf starter, and/or a third feeding of milk replacer or milk would meet this need.
