The school-age children run as soon as they arrive in our center. The only room we have is the gym. How can we limit the chaos during this time?

A great way to limit chaos during drop-off times is to establish drop-off routines that include the children. Help parents and staff by teaching children to place their belongings where they should go—coats hung up, backpacks on shelves, and so on.

Another great way is to have an easy activity that children can immediately be engaged in while drop-off is taking place. Set out crayons and paper, and give children some free time to draw until other children arrive. Put these in easily accessible places so that children know it is all right to use the materials. Encourage parents to join in if they have some extra time before they leave for the day!

The bottom line is to be prepared before children arrive. Set up a drop-off routine, and teach the children to follow it. Provide activities that keep them involved and interested. Make the rules clear, and enforce the rule every time children test it.
