The National Animal Identification System (NAIS) is a voluntary state/federal/industry partnership designed to protect animal premises, reduce hardships caused by animal disease outbreaks, and protect producer access to markets. See www.usda.gov/nais to learn more and register. Record-keeping requirements vary based on the identification device and tracking database chosen by the producer.
- Step 1. Register your premises and obtain a Premises Identification Number.
- Step 2. Identify your animals. This can be by individual animal or group/lot.
- Step 3. Choose an Animal Tracking Database for tracing certain individual animal or group/lot movements.
