First, you will need to set up a merchant account with your bank. (You may already have a merchant account if you have a brick-and-mortar store.) You will be charged a monthly fee and a percentage of each sale, usually 1.5 to 2.5 percent. You will also need secure hardware and software, or you can use another online service to perform this task. Most small business owners will need technical help to accept payments on their Web site.

A popular alternative for many small business owners is to use PayPal. PayPal can provide shopping cart software or "buy now buttons" at no cost for your Web site. You can use PayPal without having a bank merchant account. PayPal charges a per transaction fee of 2.9 percent plus $0.30 USD. Information about PayPal can be found at PayPal.
