In some western states, boron accumulation can be a problem when irrigating. High levels of boron can be toxic to crop plants, thus irrigation water should be tested for boron when the well or water source is originally tested. If the boron level is less than 2 parts per million (ppm), boron should not be a problem. If the level is higher than 2 ppm, periodic soil testing every four years will allow monitoring of the boron level in soil extracts.
