Irrigation scheduling during the season in cotton can be determined using evapotranspiration (ET) data; leaf water potential (LWP) determined by leaf pressure chambers; use of canopy temperature such as the use of a thermal infrared (IR) sensor for crop stress; use of gypsum blocks, soil moisture sensors or neutron probes to determine moisture in the soil; use of a water budget to estimate crop water use from day to day; or, last and less efficient is calendarization of irrigations. Use of two or more of the suggested methods for determing irrigation need are recommended to improve efficiency and accuracy.
