What is a secure Web site?

Last Updated: August 17, 2007

"HTTP" or "hyper-text-transfer protocol" is the language that browsers understand. Servers send out Web pages using "http," and people use a Web browser like Windows Internet Explorer to show it as a Web page. To make sure that the content of that page isn't read or altered when transferring between servers, an extra layer of security called a "secure sockets layer" is added. Data sent on a secure site is then encrypted so only the intended recipient can read the information.
