There are many toys that make good first toys for a baby. Rattles are good because the make noise and baby loves to chew on them. Have 3 or 4 different kinds of rattles. A baby will play with rattles for about the next 3 months. Talk to your child's doctor about safe play things and tips for picking safe rattles.
Texture Toys are also very good for baby's development. Find safe, clean objects that are square, round, hard, soft, fuzzy, long, or short. Show them one at a time to your baby. Let him examine them with his hands and mouth. Your baby will exercise batting practice as he waves his arms and legs and enjoys batting at objects. Your baby will like brightly-colored or contrasting colors, different-textures and lightweight objects. Use a cradle gym to help your baby practice playing with these toys. Be very sure objects are safe. Before you know it, this random batting will turn into reaching, then grasping, and then putting the objects into his mouth.
