Based on several recent research studies, a cautious approach is warranted when using income from a post-retirement job in retirement savings calculations. It is possible that you may not be working as long as you plan to. Researchers have found that pre-retirees plan to work to ages above the age that current retirees stopped working. Thus, there is a disconnect between retirement planning and reality. Among the common reasons that people stop working are health problems, loss of a job, and family care-giving responsibilities. Another big factor affecting the ability to work in retirement will be an older worker's skill set and its value to potential employers.
