Before buying an insurance policy, check the financial soundness of the company that is issuing the policy. You don't want to buy a policy from a company that may not be able to pay its claims in the event of a loss. There are five major rating firms: A.M. Best, Duff and Phelps, Moody's, Standard and Poor's, and Weiss Research. Their ratings of specific insurance companies are available from insurance agents and online. You may also be able to find their written reports on insurance companies in the reference section of large public libraries.
