Residue on the soil surface often causes the soil to warm slowly with conservation tillage. This can result in a later planting date for cotton. Conservation tillage cotton may also require more nitrogen fertilizer when a small grain is used as a winter cover crop. Cotton research in Alabama has resulted in a recommendation of 30 additional pounds of nitrogen fertilizer for cotton planted into small grain residue.
