In the first six months of 2011 outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) have been reported in Taiwan, South Korea, China, Mongolia, Bulgaria, Kazakhstan, Libya, Israel and the Palestinian Territories. Foot-and-mouth disease has also been reported in sub-Saharan Africa in 2011. It is not currently found in the Americas. It is endemic (present but not subject to an eradication campaign) in several African countries and part of Southeast Asia. The 2001 outbreaks in Great Britain and Europe received extensive media attention, but the disease continues to cause animal and economic losses in other parts of the world. North and South America, Australasia, and Antarctica continued to be free of the disease in the first half of 2011.
