Have a question? Try asking one of our Experts

Our foal is two weeks old, and his knees have gradually become more swollen the last week. The mare is on grass hay, and they are in a large pen. He is over at the knee now but was born straight.

Based on the information you have provided, it would be smart to have your local veterinarian examine the foal. If the joints are swelling and he is only two weeks old, there is a possibility that the foal may have "joint ill" or a joint infection. This is a serious concern that may require prompt veterinary treatment; otherwise, the foal may die or have long-term lameness issues.
