Horses Home

I have a mare who has been very loving, but when the weather changed from very warm to cold, her mood seems to have changed. She doesn't want to be touched and gets very jumpy and nervous. Could it be the weather? Nothing else has changed.

To some degree, horses may be affected by changes in the weather just as some people are. Perhaps your horse has arthritis or another physical condition that causes more discomfort with the onset of cold weather. To rule out this possibility or to help you better manage it, you may consider having your veterinarian give your horse a physical checkup. It is also possible that the decreased day length normally associated with cold weather may affect your horse's behavior; however, research in this area is limited and, at this point, does not verify this suggestion.
