A Feed Management Plan is a strategy developed by a livestock producer and a nutrition professional to ensure that both adequate nutrients are available in the livestock ration AND that overfeeding of nutrients is avoided. Managing feed nutrients can also increase profitability by ensuring that producers are minimizing feed costs by not paying for excess nutrients. Overfeeding of phosphorus can lead to increasing soil test levels and increased phosphorus runoff. Overfeeding of nitrogen can lead to higher ammonia emissions and odor concerns. Managing feed nutrients can reduce the cost of implementing a manure management plan on the farm level by decreasing the hauling distance and acres needed for manure application.
