What kinds of cameras are used to take remotely sensed data or images?

Many different types of cameras and sensor systems are used to take remotely sensed data and images. Many are like the ones we use every day. Many aircraft-mounted cameras use natural color, black and white, and infrared photography methods to capture images. Some cameras capture images on traditional film; others capture them on digital media. In addition, filters and other photographic methods can be used to help better capture something on the Earth of particular interest (like water bacteria or invasive plants). Many of the aerial images captured today can include an infrared band that can help distinguish some vegetation better.

Satellite-based sensors capture data and images as a digital product either photographically or through other sensors such as thermal sensing, laser sensing (LiDAR), and even radar (radio).
