What is a pre-tax dollar (or before-tax dollar) investment?

A pre-tax dollar investment is an investment made with money that has not been taxed by the government. A common example is contributions made to a tax-deferred 401(k) retirement savings plan. The amount contributed is subtracted from gross income when determining the amount of taxes owed.
