How long must you hold an investment to take advantage of long-term capital gain tax rates?

You must hold an asset for at least a year and a day to receive favorable long-term capital gain tax rates. If an asset is owned for less than this time, it is considered a short-term capital gain and taxed at the rate of an investor's marginal tax bracket.
