Every time I take my horse into water, he insists on putting his nose right into the mud/clay and eating it. Why is he doing this, and should I be concerned?

The major concern with this behavior might be a case of sand colic, which could happen when horses drink sandy or muddy water. If you are allowing him to drink while on the trail, be sure you keep him away from the edge of the water, where the hooves will stir up the base. If you want him to drink, ride your horse to the middle or away from the edge of the water before you allow him to drink.
