Codling moth is a serious introduced pest of apples. Management suggestions include using monitoring traps, measuring temperatures, and, when trapped moth populations get high enough, application of spray materials such as Bacillus thuringensis (B.t.). Sanitation (disposal) of affected apples is also very important. For more information, see The Ohio State University publication: Codling Moth on Fruit Trees. Another good publication describing methods for homeowner control was done in Utah: Integrated Pest Management ; a county agent found that bagging small fruit in the spring was the best method of control. Sprays need to be timed based on both the number of moths found in the traps and the air temperature, so read the references carefully to avoid wormy apples in your dooryard. Lastly, be sure to check with your local Master Gardeners to learn of local success in managing this pest.
